Tune Hotels to open 280 room hotel in Westlands, Nairobi in July 2016

The opening of the budget Tune Hotels along Raphta Road in Westlands will see it become the latest international hospitality chain to invest in Kenya. The 11-storey, 280-room facility which cost an estimated Sh2.9 billion will be operating on a ‘no frills’ model, where customers only pay for the amenities they use. Tune Hotel Nairobi, will be the brand’s first hotel in Africa.

Tune Hotel Nairobi – Westlands is offering 5 rooms at a special price of KSh995 per night to mark the hotel’s entry into the Kenyan market from 18th Juy to 31st August, 2016. Tune Nairobi’s regular room rates will average between KSh5000-KSh12,000 per night depending on how early guests book. The average cost of a room in quality hotels in Nairobi today averages between KSh12,000-30,000 per night.

Joe Stenson, Hotels Director, Tune Hotels, UK, said, “The potential for budget hotels is big and the supply does not currently meet this demand. We want to offer guests great service and value as well as providing them with a memorable stay. At the moment, there is a gap in the market for quality, clean and secure accommodation. There are numerous hotels offering either high or low end services but we are moving into a space where the emphasis is giving the guest a great night sleep with cut down non-essential services so that we can keep our rates down.”

Elaborating on the hotel facilities and services, Stuart Clay, General Manager, Tune Hotel –  Nairobi, Westlands, said, “We often check into hotels when we travel and we really don’t get to use all the facilities a room or indeed a hotel can offer, like lounge chairs or baths, most times you’ll drop down to the restaurant to grab a meal and not even think about using room service. We don’t want to charge you for these amid other things you don’t use – so we’ve done away with many of them.”

“Our rooms are smaller than the usual Kenyan hotel room because in truth we believe you don’t actually need that much room to sleep, in fact the essentials are simply just a very high quality bed, quality linen and a great power shower. The extra unused services make the customer pay more and we’re reducing all of that so the customer in the end benefits. There are however fixed elements we cannot compromise on like quality of service, security and design. We’ve invested heavily in a great security system in and around the hotel.

The hotel design is fresh with a overall feeling of relaxation and serenity while the Hypnos beds give you the ultimate nights sleep. The rooms have en-suite thermostatic power showers and in-room thermostatically controlled comfort cooling, ” he added.

The rate savvy customer is one of the largest here in Kenya but currently there isn’t enough being done to service these needs according to their budgets. That’s the main reason why we have chosen now to launch in Africa. We feel the time is right for a limited service hotel in Kenya,” he added.

Tune Hotel in Nairobi is currently in the last phase of completion with opening planned for July 2016. The hotel will employ 122 local permanent staff in different positions including front office, housekeeping, food & beverage, sales and marketing. Tune is also introducing the concept of multi-skill training whereby staff will be trained on different skill sets. Tune Hotels has tied-up with Utali College for internships and is also exploring opportunities with colleges such as Strathmore.
