The Financial Times recently highlighted this shift, noting the significant decline in global investment in online education companies as free generative AI tools gain traction. Citing the data from PitchBook, a provider of market data, the paper reveals a stark contrast in investment figures, with edtech businesses receiving a mere $3 billion in 2024, a dramatic fall from the $17 billion invested during the pandemic’s peak in 2021.
This trend underscores the growing influence of AI in the educational landscape, as it offers innovative solutions that challenge established business models and promote new ways of learning.
This shift also demonstrates how quickly some parts of the world adapt to changes. While investment in traditional edtech companies wane, the agile integration of AI into education systems showcases how swiftly regions can pivot towards more efficient, cost-effective solutions.
This rapid adaptation is evident in countries that prioritize technological advancement and innovation, setting a precedent for others to follow. AI is revolutionizing education through adaptive learning systems that tailor educational experiences to individual student needs, allowing for personalized instruction that addresses specific strengths and weaknesses.

However, the promise of AI in education is not without its detractors. In Africa, teachers, unions, and policymakers often cite fear of job losses, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of trained teachers as barriers to implementing these transformative technologies. Yet, as the adage goes, “where there is a will, there is a way.”
The potential to overcome these challenges lies within reach. Providing every rural child with affordable satellite internet technology, locally assembled tablets, and leveraging the continent’s abundant solar energy for power can drive socio-economic transformation.
These relatively simple changes can pave the way for educational reforms, nurture a talent pool capable of driving structural changes, and undoubtedly contribute to reducing poverty, conflict, and migration.The fears of job loss are misguided. The same concerns were raised in the 1980s with the emergence of computers. Instead, more jobs were created.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, 85 million jobs may lose by 2025 because of automation, but projections indicate that some 97 million were to be created. Most of these jobs were generated in sectors that did not exist ten years before, such as renewable energy, biotechnology, and cybersecurity. The introduction of new technologies is producing previously unheard-of occupations.
Similarly, many of those teaching will end up in new jobs that will emerge, including content development, analytics, and many others. Further, the integration of AI into education will not render educators obsolete; rather, it will redefine their roles and create opportunities for professional growth. Teachers can transition into roles that involve creating and curating educational content, analyzing student performance data to provide targeted interventions, and facilitating personalized learning experiences.
Furthermore, educators will have the chance to become mentors and guides, focusing on the development of critical thinking, creativity, and other soft skills that are essential in the modern world. In embracing these new roles, teachers can enhance their impact on student learning outcomes and contribute to a more dynamic and effective educational system. The potential for innovation in this new educational paradigm is immense.

Reforming education in Africa is not only a necessity for economic growth and social development but also a means to empower the young generation to build a brighter future for the continent. Improved access to education in Africa faces many challenges, including infrastructure, quality of education, governance and policies, community and parental participation, and addressing socio-economic barriers.
The problem has always been prioritizing how to tackle these issues. In my view, investing in emerging technologies could quickly transform the sector despite its disruptive nature.The infusion of AI and other advanced technologies into the African education system could revolutionize how education is delivered and received.
