9th East Africa Philanthropy Conference will take place from June 11–13, 2024, in Kigali, Rwanda, under the theme “Philanthropy Transforming Systems: Promoting Inclusive, Sustainable, and Locally-Led Development.”
Organized by the East Africa Philanthropy Network (EAPN), the conference will bring together philanthropy leaders, government representatives, businesses, and civil society to discuss the sector’s evolving role in driving systemic change.
According to the EAPN website, one major discussion point will be the impact of global economic shifts, political realignments, and societal expectations on philanthropy’s sustainability. The conference will assess how these changes shape funding strategies and long-term resilience.
The conference also aims to foster multi-sectoral collaboration by bringing together stakeholders from philanthropy, government, business, academia, and civil society. Effective partnerships across these sectors are crucial. The conference will explore how cross-sector partnerships can drive systemic and sustainable change.
Another focus of the conference is policy and regulatory engagement. With increasing financial and legal restrictions on non-profit organizations, the conference will highlight philanthropy’s role in shaping policies that create an enabling environment for charitable organizations and grant-making institutions.
Ensuring financial resilience is another critical goal. Financial sustainability remains a key concern. To move beyond traditional donor funding, the conference will explore innovative funding models, impact investing, and new capital mobilization strategies to secure long-term resilience.
Governance transformation will also be a central theme. The conference aims to promote locally-led, participatory, and trust-based funding models that empower communities and shift decision-making power to local stakeholders. By rethinking governance structures, philanthropy can become more responsive, inclusive, and impactful.
Additionally, the conference will examine the role of technology and AI in philanthropy, addressing both opportunities and ethical challenges.
The conference will also advocate for locally-led, trust-based funding models that shift power to communities, ensuring philanthropy becomes more responsive and inclusive.
Ultimately, the conference aims to position philanthropy as a proactive force driving systemic change. By fostering dialogue, innovation, and collaboration, it seeks to shape a more sustainable, inclusive, and impactful philanthropic landscape.
