Over 100 of elderly persons from Umande, in Laikipia East Sub County have benefitted from relief food, aimed at cushioning them from hunger, amid the ongoing drought in the area.
The assortment of food items donated by Kapu Africa and International Relief for Africa targeted the elderly in the community aged over 60 years and above. Some of the items they benefit with include porridge flour and rice.
Dr. Allan Mugambi, a philanthropist who had organized the initiative said that old people were often forgotten despite their age, hence exposing them to hardship, with no one to depend on.
“Old people are often forgotten and they suffer hardships, while everyone else is busy in the city. We need to support them, especially during drought season. We call on everyone to join us and help the elderly in need,” said Dr. Mugambi.
He highlighted that the elderly needed nutritious meals to boost their immune systems as they age as a way of combating age related ailments. They were also sensitized on healthy living.
The county feeding programme coordinator Koome Kiragu emphasized the need for more collaborative efforts to address malnutrition among the elderly, noting that prolonged food insecurity poses serious health risks.
Leah Muthoni, a widow and one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude for the food supplies, stating that the nutritious food helps them significantly.
“We are happy to receive the donation, and it helps us a lot. Many of us suffer from food insecurity, I urge for continued support since food is scarce,’’ she said.
