Artists across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania now have an opportunity to be part of a regional movement merging art and activism. ForumCiv has opened applications for its inaugural East Africa Artivism Fellowship, a program aimed at empowering creatives who use their craft to champion democracy, human rights, and social justice.
The fellowship, now in its fourth iteration but first with a regional cohort, builds on the success of previous editions in Kenya and Tanzania. It brings together visual artists, performers, storytellers, digital creatives, and musicians who are passionate about using art to reimagine civic spaces and amplify marginalized voices.
What’s the goal?
Through mentorship, community projects, and collaborative learning, the Artivism Fellowship supports participants to:
- Challenge injustice through artistic expression.
- Spark dialogue on governance, equality, and rights.
- Promote sustainable livelihoods in the creative sector.
- Influence public discourse and policy through culture and technology.
So far, over 45 artists have graduated from the program, forming a growing network of civic-minded creatives shaping narratives from the grassroots up.
Who should apply?
ForumCiv is calling on:
- Artists based in Kenya, Uganda, or Tanzania.
- Creatives who are committed to social justice, democracy, and civic engagement.
- Those eager to learn, collaborate, and co-create across borders.
The program is especially relevant for artivists tackling issues like gender equality, climate justice, freedom of expression, and inclusion.
Why it matters
In an era where civic space is shrinking and public discourse is increasingly polarized, art remains a powerful medium to bridge divides and push for change. The Artivism Fellowship would offer interested participants a platform to put their skills to use, as well as help them navigate the activism sector as creatives.
Applications are now open. To be part of the next cohort, click HERE to apply before May 9, 2025
