The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University is the world’s first academic institution solely dedicated to the study and teaching of philanthropy.
Its origins date back to 1987, when the Center on Philanthropy was founded at IU Indianapolis.
That center became the birthplace of philanthropic studies as a formal field, offering the first bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in the United States.
It also introduced the nation’s first endowed chair in philanthropy.
Officially launched as a school in 2013, it was named in honor of the Lilly family, whose philanthropic legacy and support through the Lilly Endowment continue to shape its mission.
Today, the school educates and equips students and professionals who are transforming philanthropy worldwide.

Research with Global Impact
Research is at the heart of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Its faculty and research centers explore a broad spectrum of themes—from donor motivations and giving trends to the influence of religion and gender in philanthropy.
The school is home to specialized institutes such as the Women’s Philanthropy Institute and the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving. These centers investigate how different communities engage in charitable work and how those patterns are evolving.
In addition to its domestic research, the school has extended its focus to international philanthropy—particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Studies have explored the opportunities and challenges of fundraising within African higher education institutions, analyzing donor engagement and institutional practices. It has also facilitated dialogue among African advancement professionals, civil society leaders, and policymakers, promoting informed discussions on philanthropy and educational development in the region.
Recognized Philanthropic Collaborators
The school has collaborated with several influential philanthropic organizations through research partnerships, events, and thought leadership. These include:
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, known for its large-scale investments in global health and education, particularly in African countries. The foundation’s emphasis on data-driven impact resonates with the school’s evidence-based approach.
Ford Foundation, a global advocate for social justice, human rights, and equity. Its work parallels the school’s commitment to inclusive and ethical giving.
Open Society Foundations, which support democratic governance, education, and civil society worldwide. The school’s research helps provide deeper context for understanding philanthropic effectiveness in complex regions.
Through these collaborations, the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy contributes to global philanthropy not just as an observer but as an active participant in shaping smarter, more responsive giving practices.
