On December 2, 2025, communities across Africa and the diaspora will come together for Sankofa: Honoring Our Generosity Traditions, Imagining What’s Next, a live virtual conversation exploring African traditions of giving and their relevance today.
The event, scheduled for 4:00 PM EAT, coincides with GivingTuesday, the global day dedicated to celebrating generosity in all its forms.
The term Sankofa comes from the Akan people of Ghana and literally means “go back and get it.” It embodies the idea of revisiting the wisdom of the past to guide the present and future.
GivingTuesday, a global movement that honours generosity in all its forms, is the perfect occasion for this conversation.
On December 2nd, 2025, we gather across Africa and the diaspora to reflect and celebrate the generosity traditions that have stood the test of time.
It is also an opportunity for us to imagine what is possible, leveraging creativity, innovation, and digital technology.
The webinar will focus on how African communities have long valued care, solidarity, and generosity as foundational social infrastructure, and how these practices continue to shape modern approaches to philanthropy, leadership, and civic engagement.
Who Can Attend
The webinar is open to anyone interested in African cultural practices, philanthropy, community development, or social impact.
This includes students, professionals, community organizers, development practitioners, and anyone passionate about strengthening connections between African traditions and contemporary initiatives.
Participants from across Africa and the diaspora are encouraged to join, making it a truly global conversation.
What to Expect
The 90-minute live conversation will feature discussions on:
- How African traditions of generosity and communal care have shaped societies historically.
- The ways these practices continue to influence modern community organizing and leadership.
- Innovative approaches to integrating cultural generosity practices into contemporary philanthropy, civic engagement, and development initiatives.
- Stories and examples from communities across Africa and the diaspora that illustrate generosity as a living system.
In addition, the webinar will be complemented by a distributed campaign of community and creative activations, designed to spark reflection and imagination.
Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences of giving, highlight local initiatives, and consider how African generosity traditions can inspire future solutions for social cohesion and development.
GivingTuesday, which began in 2012, is a global movement celebrating generosity in all its forms.
Sankofa aligns naturally with this vision, emphasizing that acts of care, sharing, and support are central to community resilience.
By combining traditional African wisdom with contemporary platforms for giving, the event highlights how cultural practices can inform meaningful and sustainable action in today’s world.
Why Attend
Participants will gain insights into African generosity as both a cultural value and a practical tool for community building.
The webinar offers opportunities for learning, reflection, and networking with thought leaders, changemakers, and community members committed to imagining new ways of giving and leading collectively.
