3,600 Kenyan youth will benefit from a new initiative offering free Artificial Intelligence (AI) upskilling, as Moringa officially launches a nationwide programme aimed at preparing young professionals for the rapidly evolving digital economy.
The initiative seeks to equip participants with practical, future-ready AI skills by December 2026, targeting sectors expected to undergo significant transformation, including software engineering, education, and healthcare.
The programme is funded through a $2 million grant from Google and implemented in partnership with WeThinkCode, a South Africa-based software development academy.
It forms part of a broader continental effort to train 12,000 learners across Kenya and South Africa, with Moringa leading the Kenyan rollout.
Speaking at the launch, Moringa CEO Nikki Germany highlighted that the initiative goes beyond technical training.
“This initiative is not just about tech, it’s about economic mobility. We’re unlocking opportunities for thousands of Kenyans to participate meaningfully in the AI-driven economy, not as passive consumers, but as active innovators,” she said.
The organisation is leveraging its alumni network, grassroots partnerships, and regional expertise to ensure inclusive access to AI training, particularly for young people from underrepresented communities and regions beyond major urban centres.
Training will begin with young software engineers, building on Moringa’s established strengths in software development, before expanding into other professional fields where AI adoption is accelerating.
The curriculum emphasises hands-on, practical instruction, combining technical AI competencies with problem-solving, ethical considerations, and real-world applications designed to create measurable impact in participants’ workplaces and communities.
Why the Initiative Matters
The programme comes at a pivotal moment, as AI continues to reshape industries worldwide from healthcare and education to logistics, creative media, and financial services.
Despite the growing importance of AI skills, access to high-quality training remains heavily concentrated in the Global North, limiting Africa’s participation in shaping how AI is developed, deployed, and governed.
By building local capacity, Moringa’s initiative seeks to strengthen Kenya’s workforce readiness while supporting broader goals of digital inclusion, innovation, and economic resilience.
“We believe Kenya can lead the continent in responsible AI adoption,” Nikki added.
“This programme is how we prepare our workforce not just for jobs of the future, but for leadership in the technologies shaping that future.”
To ensure wide participation, Moringa has launched a nationwide recruitment drive targeting women, youth from underrepresented communities, and professionals outside major cities.
Partnerships with universities, tech hubs, and industry players are being leveraged to raise awareness and encourage enrollment, helping ensure that opportunities are accessible across socioeconomic and geographic boundaries.
As the programme scales, Moringa remains committed to preparing Kenyan talent not only to adapt to AI-driven change, but to actively shape the continent’s technological future.
By combining globally relevant skills with local context, ethical frameworks, and practical application, the initiative aims to foster inclusive growth and long-term national resilience.
By the end of 2026, thousands of Kenyan professionals are expected to emerge from the programme ready to contribute to and lead in the AI-driven economy.
