Prince Rahim, the new Aga Khan
Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini was on February 5, 2025 named the new Aga Khan, spiritual leader of millions of Shia Ismaili Muslims around the world.
He took on the role from his father Prince Karim Aga Khan, who died on February 4, 2025 at the age of 88.
The appointment was made after Prince Karim Aga Khan’s will was unsealed, the Aga Khan Development Network said in a statement.
During his time as the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslim community, the late Aga Khan helped found the The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), a charity responsible for running hundreds of hospitals, educational and cultural projects, mainly in the developing world.
Today, the AKF is a leading global development organisation working to address the root causes of poverty.
“For more than 50 years, we have helped create strong community institutions that support sustainable, locally-driven initiatives to improve the lives of millions of people,” the Foundation says on its official website.
The Foundation is focused in developing human capacity including early childhood development, education and health.
It is also engaged in building resilient communities through projects on environment and climate change, agriculture and food security, civil society, disaster preparedness and response alongside habitat planning and improvement.
“Rooted in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, our staff have unique insights into the complex challenges people face today as well as the opportunities for tomorrow. By combining local knowledge with global best practices, we strive to bring about transformative and long-lasting improvements to quality of life. Taking a generational approach, AKF has built the trust required to do this work even in the most fragile contexts,” the Foundation adds.
Prince Rahim is expected to continue his father’s legacy of philanthropy and leadership, guiding the Ismaili community.
