The East Africa Philanthropy Network has named Africa Solutions Media Hub as the Official Storytelling Partner for the 10th East Africa Philanthropy Conference, cementing the role of impact journalism and documentation at the centre of the region’s philanthropy agenda.
In a message shared on its official X account, EAPN framed the announcement as more than a media partnership.
It described it as a deliberate decision rooted in how philanthropy measures impact, remembers its work and remains accountable to the communities it serves.
“Pull up a chair. This is a math class about philanthropy, storytelling, and why we just named an Official Storytelling Partner for the 10th East Africa Philanthropy Conference,” EAPN said in the post.
The conference will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and hosted at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel.
It is scheduled to take place in June and will bring together philanthropic leaders, civil society actors, donors and policymakers from across East Africa and beyond.
Storytelling as the Measure of Impact.
EAPN used the language of mathematics to explain its thinking.
In the post, the network argued that when philanthropic work is stripped to its core, what remains is not paperwork or theory, but people and lived change.
“Strip any philanthropic intervention down to its root, and what you find is not a logframe. It is a person in a community whose life either changed or did not,” EAPN said.
The network pointed to examples such as mobile health units reaching pastoral communities, teachers restoring access to education in underserved areas, and recyclers transforming livelihoods in rural economies.
According to EAPN, these stories are the true measure of whether philanthropy works.
It is this grounding in human experience that informed the decision to appoint Africa Solutions Media Hub as the official partner for storytelling at the conference.
Capturing Grassroots Voices as Data
EAPN also said that one of the sector’s biggest gaps is the absence of systematically documented grassroots voices. In its words, these voices form the “missing dataset” in philanthropy.
“When climate philanthropy excludes youth, someone has to sum the evidence. When social movements cannot access capital to sustain themselves, someone has to document the cost,” the network said.
EAPN argued that stories are not anecdotes, but data points.
When aggregated over time, they shape better decisions, stronger strategies and more accountable institutions.
Africa Solutions Media Hub has built its reputation around documenting such grassroots experiences.
The Kenya-based media house focuses on impact journalism, philanthropy, community development and solutions-driven reporting across Africa.
From Promises to Real Change
Another key theme highlighted by EAPN is the difference between promises and actual change.
The network said philanthropy must be judged by what shifts on the ground, not by intentions or grant language.
“Delta measures change. Not intention. Not a theory of change document. Change,” EAPN said in the post.
This focus aligns with Africa Solutions Media Hub’s editorial approach, which centres on evidence of impact, voices of beneficiaries and long-term outcomes rather than announcements alone.
The partnership will see the media house document conversations on the conference stage and trace them back to communities where commitments are meant to land.
Building Institutional Memory
EAPN also stressed the importance of sustained storytelling over time.
It said that when stories are told consistently and with editorial rigour, they become institutional memory for the sector.
“One story captures a moment. But storytelling sustained over time accumulates into a record,” the network said.
Africa Solutions Media Hub was part of the storytelling team during the 9th East Africa Philanthropy Conference held in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2025.
Its return for the tenth edition builds on that experience and continuity.
By returning to document the Addis Ababa conference, the media house is expected to connect past commitments with current realities and future directions.
Documentation That Never Ends
EAPN described documentation as a continuous process that links institutions to the people they claim to serve. It said this role never ends and never repeats, but constantly connects dialogue to outcomes.
“It connects the conference stage to the community. The institution to the people it claims to serve,” EAPN said.
The network concluded that when philanthropy is measured through impact stories, grassroots voices, real change, institutional memory and sustained documentation, the solution is Africa Solutions Media Hub.
The appointment positions the media house as a central player in shaping how the region’s philanthropy story is told, remembered and acted upon.
