Young Africans with bold ideas on community transformation now have an opportunity to take their thinking beyond the page and into continental conversations, following the launch of the Africa Philanthropy Network (APN) Essay Contest 2026.
The annual contest, spotlighted by the Keeping It Real (KIR) Foundation as part of its Opportunity Monday series, invites participants to explore how African philanthropy can respond to pressing social challenges through innovation and practice.
A Platform for Youth Voices
Open to Africans aged 18 to 35 across sub-Saharan Africa, the competition is designed to elevate youth voices in shaping the future of giving and social investment on the continent.
Organisers say the platform goes beyond writing, positioning itself as a space for ideas that can influence policy, practice, and community-led action.
At the centre of the contest is the theme: “African Philanthropy transforming community challenges: Innovation and Practice.”
Participants are encouraged to interrogate how local giving traditions, emerging models, and grassroots initiatives are addressing issues ranging from health and education to climate resilience and social equity.
Expanding the Meaning of Philanthropy
While philanthropy is often framed through formal institutions and large-scale funding, the competition challenges young writers to think more broadly about what giving looks like in African contexts.
This includes informal systems of support, community solidarity, and locally driven solutions that are often overlooked in mainstream narratives.
The essay, capped at 1,500 words, can be submitted in English, French, Portuguese, or Kiswahili, reflecting the contest’s commitment to inclusivity and regional diversity.
Each applicant is allowed one submission.
Recognition Beyond the Prize
Winners of the contest stand to gain more than recognition.
In addition to cash prizes and certificates, selected essays will be featured in youth-focused forums and events organised by the Africa Philanthropy Network, offering contributors a chance to engage with practitioners, funders, and policymakers from across the continent.
