Evelyn Makena is a communications practitioner, a media trainer and an award winning features writer specialising on gender, health, child protection and environmental conservation. She worked at People Daily Newspaper in Kenya between 2016 and 2021 as a Features Writer. Makena is currently a freelance Features Writer with her work published by Africa Solutions Media Hub, People Daily Newspaper, the Independent- UK, Andariya Magazine among others.
Makena has trained on Solutions Journalism from Internews, Solutions Journalism Network, Earth Journalism Network and applied the Solutions Journalism approach to storytelling for over 4 years. She is a recipient of the 2021 Annual Journalism Excellence Awards Gender – Print Category by Media Council of Kenya and the 2020 ‘Stay at Home’ media recognition awards Print Category-
East African region by Merck Foundation.
She is an alumni of the Women in News Leadership Accelerator Programme, a leadership program for women journalists and editors in Africa and Arab region. Makena is a fellow of the Space for Giants, African Journalism Conservation Fellowship, (Dec 2017- to 2023) which consists of environment reporters from Kenya, Uganda, Botswana and Angola keen on amplifying African voices on conservation to the international audiences. In 2020, she served as a United Nations Online Volunteer under the Young Environmental Journalists Campaign focusing on environmental, health and human rights impacts of the mining sector.
Makena is holds a Master of Arts Degree in Development Communication from the University of Nairobi.
