Kenyan innovation was on full display at the Africa Entrepreneurship Awards 2026, with three local startups winning top continental honours for their innovative solutions to social and economic challenges across Africa.
The awards were presented during the 13th Sankalp Africa Summit, held on 25–26 February 2026 in Nairobi.
The summit brings together entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and ecosystem actors from across the continent to celebrate and support impact‑driven ventures.
Kenyan Winners Take Top Prizes
Kenya claimed three of the five category awards, highlighting the strength of its startup ecosystem.
Winners were selected from 16 finalists competing across five innovation tracks AgriTech, Circular Tech, Climate Tech, FinTech, and HealthTech.
Rio Fish Ltd – AgriTech Award
Led by Chief Executive Officer Angela Odero, Rio Fish Ltd won the AgriTech category for its sustainable fish farming solution, designed to support productivity and profitability for fish farmers. By combining technological tools with best aquaculture practices, the venture is helping boost food production and create income opportunities in rural and peri‑urban communities.
M‑Taka Solutions – Circular Tech Award
M‑Taka Solutions, headed by Benson Abila, took the Circular Tech prize with its digital platform that connects households, waste collectors, and recycling businesses. The initiative turns everyday waste into economic value, strengthening recycling ecosystems and helping informal waste workers generate income.
Malaica AG – HealthTech Award
Co‑founded by Victor Murage Ndegwa, Malaica AG secured the HealthTech award. The startup’s model focuses on maternal healthcare services, aiming to improve access to essential care for mothers and newborns a critical need in underserved communities.
Other Winners from Across Africa
While Kenyan ventures stood out, two continental winners were also recognised. Sosai Renewable Energies Ltd from Nigeria won the ClimateTech award for its rural solar energy programme, and Somo Africa Trust received the FinTech award for its work empowering micro and small enterprises across East Africa.
Summit Highlights Innovation and Impact
The Sankalp Africa Summit is one of the continent’s largest entrepreneurship gatherings. It draws founders, investors, and ecosystem partners who seek to build and scale ventures with social and economic impact.
This year’s event brought together more than 1,000 participants from over 50 countries, underlining Nairobi’s role as a hub of innovation in Africa.
Organisers noted that the event has helped channel over US$800 million in capital to African entrepreneurs since its inception, strengthening pathways for startups to access funding, mentorship, and market connections.
A Boost for Kenya’s Startup Scene
The success of Kenyan startups at the awards reflects broader trends in the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Kenyan ventures have been among the most active and visible in securing funding and scaling solutions that tackle systemic challenges, including food security, waste management, and healthcare delivery.
For Rio Fish Ltd, M‑Taka Solutions, and Malaica AG, winning continental recognition is expected to raise their profiles with investors and partners, creating opportunities to expand their impact beyond Kenya and into regional markets.
