Schools across Kenya’s Tsavo landscape are set to benefit from expanded access to digital learning and environmental education following the rollout of a programme aimed at integrating technology into conservation-focused schooling.
The initiative, implemented through a partnership between the African Wildlife Foundation and Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, is supporting the installation of ICT infrastructure in selected schools to strengthen both digital literacy and biodiversity education among learners.
At Ngwata Comprehensive School in Makueni County, a newly launched ICT laboratory equipped with computers and internet connectivity will support classroom learning while exposing students to digital tools and conservation-based resources.
The project also includes a rainwater harvesting system intended to improve water access in the dryland region, where shortages often disrupt school operations.
Speaking during the launch, African Wildlife Foundation Associate Director for Conservation Education and Youth Leadership Simangele Msweli said the programme is designed to build both skills and environmental awareness among young people.
“By providing young people with access to technology alongside conservation knowledge, we are equipping them with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to become informed decision makers and champions of Kenya’s natural heritage,” she said.
Wildlife Clubs of Kenya Director of Conservation Programmes Dr. George Njagi said the initiative encourages more interactive learning approaches that go beyond traditional classroom teaching.
“The ICT laboratory creates new opportunities for learners to explore conservation through research, collaboration, and digital innovation,” he said.
The programme is being implemented across 137 schools in the Tsavo landscape, with the aim of strengthening digital skills while nurturing environmental stewardship among learners.
