Huawei Green Development Summit 2024 centered on how the company and its industry partners use green information and communications technologies to support low-carbon urban development, nature reserves, bridge the digital divide, and more. Huawei held the Summit, themed “Thrive with Green ICT”, during MWC Barcelona 2024.
Present at the summit, included the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) among others.
Experts at the summit stated that Technology and technical skills are vital in combating the pressing issue of climate change by mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and building a more sustainable future.
“We have to find solutions to the global climate crisis. Many of the solutions will make use of technology. Therefore, it’s necessary for us to have a workforce that has the green skills and digital literacy to find solutions that will make our economies and societies greener. It’s not just about reducing emissions; it’s about leveraging innovation to transform our energy systems, transportation networks, and industries,” said Friedrich Huebler Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC’s International Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
Mr. Huebler spoke at the summit held in Barcelona, Spain, on February 29, 2024 –
Soledad Patiño, the Coordinator of the UNESCO Skills Academy, believes harnessing tech resources will require the right partnerships with private sector players, noting that private sector players such as Huawei Technologies hold the key to the world’s ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
“They can bring the expertise that they have, but also the understanding and the knowledge of this fast-evolving change in labor markets. This is fundamental for helping people make the transition from school to work,” Ms. Patiño said.
The experts further noted that breakthroughs in energy storage, smart grid systems, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) were paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.
